The Research Study
Johnson and Puplampu (2008) set out to test and validate their Ecological Techno-Subsystem Theory by conducting an expansive research study of 128 children. The participating children ranged from 6 to 12 years of age and represented both the male and female genders. These children were assessed on their cognitive development using three constructs, which corresponded to the three ecological systems/subsystems: bioecology (child development), techno-subsystem (indices of child use of the Internet at home) and microsystem (family socioeconomic characteristics). In addition to testing the three ecological systems that influence a child's cognitive development, parents also completed a questionnaire that contained questions regarding their access to and use of theInternet at home.
